Minimum Rental Standards Check
In March of 2021 Consumer Affairs adopted the minimum standards that all rented properties in Victoria must meet. There are 14 categories including bathrooms, electrical safety, heating, kitchens, laundry, lighting, locks, mould and dampness, structural soundness, toilets, ventilation, vermin proof bins, window coverings and windows. Basic Facilities
Ensuring that all rentals include a bathroom with a working sink, shower or bath and hot and cold water. A fixed heater must be installed in the main living area. A kitchen with a dedicated cooking and food prep area and sink in good working order with hot and cold water. Toilets that are in good working order and connected to a sewerage or septic system. The property must have curtains or blinds in rooms used for living or sleeping and they must open and close.
Safe Living Environment
All rental properties must have modern switchboards with circuit breakers and electrical safety switches. Interior rooms, corridors and hallways must have access to working lights. The property must have natural light during the day and at night it must have access to artificial lighting. External entry doors must have functional dead locks or locks that people can unlock with a key from outside. You must also be able to open the door without a key from the outside. All external windows that people can open must have latches. Latches must secure the windows against outside entry.
Healthy Living Environment
If there is a laundry at the property the rental provider must ensure that it's connected to a reasonable supply of hot and cold water. All rooms must be free from mould and dampness caused by or related to the building structure. The property must be structurally sound and weatherproof and all rooms must have adequate ventilation including the bathroom, toilet and laundry. Rental providers must supply the renters with rubbish bings. Bins must be vermin-proof and meet council collection standards.
